How Much Does the Camino de Santiago Cost? (2026 Budget Guide)
Complete 2026 budget guide for the Camino Francés: accommodation, food, luggage transfer, taxi costs. Daily budgets from €30 to €120. Real numbers, no guesswork.
How much does the Camino cost?
Short answer: €30 to €120 per day, depending on how you sleep and eat. For the classic last 100 km from Sarria to Santiago (5-6 days), expect €250-€700 total per person, all included.
This guide breaks down every expense so you can plan with real numbers.
Accommodation (the biggest variable)
- Municipal albergues: €10-12 per night. First come, first served — no booking. Arrive by 11 AM in high season.
- Private albergues: €15-18 per night. Shared dorms but usually better beds, WiFi, laundry. Often bookable.
- Pensions / guesthouses: €35-55 per night. Private room, private bathroom. Good compromise.
- Hotels / rural houses: €50-100+ per night. Full comfort, breakfast included, parking.
If you want a mix, budget an average of €25/night.

Food (the second biggest)
- Austere (€15/day): supermarket breakfast + picnic lunch + pilgrim menu dinner (€12-15).
- Medium (€25/day): bar breakfast + menu of the day + dinner in a bar.
- Full (€45+/day): restaurants for every meal, wines, tasting specialties.
The pilgrim menu is the sweet spot: €12-15 for 3 courses (bread and wine/water included). Almost every bar on the Camino offers it.
Luggage transfer (optional but popular)
- €8 per day per backpack.: They pick it up at your accommodation before 8 AM and drop it at the next one before 3 PM.
- For 5-6 days, that's €40-50 — often worth it if you have back issues or want to enjoy the walk with less weight.
Taxi between stages (emergency/logistics)
- €30-50 per short hop: between towns. Ex: Sarria→Portomarín ~€40 (23 km).
- €60-120 for longer skips: like Portomarín→Arzúa (40+ km).
- Flat price, luggage included. Useful if you get an injury, bad blisters, or run out of time.

Transport to the start
- Taxi Santiago Airport (SCQ) to Sarria: ~€131 (€32/person if 4 people share). 75 minutes, door to door. See airport to Sarria.
- Bus SCQ → Santiago → Sarria: ~€12 per person, 3-4 hours with transfer.
- Train Santiago → Sarria: ~€10 per person, 2.5 hours. Need a taxi from SCQ to Santiago train station first.
The taxi is faster and more comfortable if you land with luggage. The bus is cheaper if you're solo and not tired.
Extras you shouldn't forget
- Pilgrim credencial: €2-3 (buy at starting town or albergues)
- Compostela certificate: free (obtained at Pilgrim Office in Santiago)
- Compostela distance certificate (optional): €3
- Farmacia / pharmacy needs: blisters, tape, ibuprofen — budget €15-25 per person
- Souvenirs and small gifts: €20-50 per person
- Buffer for unexpected costs: €50 per person always recommended

Tips to save money
- Book ahead in high season. May-September last-minute prices are brutal.
- Pilgrim menus are underrated. 3 courses + wine for €13 is hard to beat elsewhere.
- Share a private room between 2-3 people. Often cheaper per head than separate albergue beds.
- Municipal albergues require flexibility — you can't book, so plan your walking pace to arrive early.
- If you're a group of 4, a taxi from Santiago Airport to Sarria costs €32 per person — basically the same as the bus but half the time.
Safe travels and buen Camino.
