The Camino Your Way: Short on Time, for Seniors, or at Your Own Pace

Tailor your Camino de Santiago to your situation: short on time, older pilgrims, special needs or your own pace. Practical tips, support taxis and tailor-made routes.

Camino de Santiago Planning Your Camino Tips

The Camino isn't one size fits all

One of the great things about the Camino de Santiago is that it adapts to almost anyone: whatever number of days you have, whatever shape you're in, and whatever your age. You don't need to be an athlete or have a free month. The key is to fit the Camino to YOUR situation, not the other way around.

I only have a few days

If you only have a week —or less—, the most common option is to walk the last 100 km from Sarria, the minimum stretch to earn the Compostela, over 5 stages. But if you have even less time:

  • 3-4 days: a shorter stretch (Sarria to Melide, or Palas de Rei to Santiago) without earning the Compostela, but enjoying the Camino just the same.
  • A weekend: the final stage, from O Pedrouzo to Santiago, or an iconic stretch with transfers.

Shortening stages with a support taxi lets you "compress" the Camino: you walk the most beautiful sections and skip the transitional ones.

For older pilgrims or those with less stamina

Age is no obstacle: every year, thousands of older pilgrims complete the Camino. The secret is to plan it sensibly:

  • Shorter stages: split the long days into two.
  • Luggage transfer: walk with only a small daypack.
  • Comfortable accommodation: guesthouses and hotels with a good bed instead of bunks.
  • Support taxi: if your strength fails you one day, shorten the stage without giving up the Camino.

With special needs

The Camino is also possible with reduced mobility or specific needs, with careful planning of the terrain and the support you'll need. We cover this in detail in the accessible Camino.

How a tailor-made Camino comes together

A tailor-made Camino isn't a fixed package: it's an itinerary designed around you. A good agency adjusts the kilometres per day to your fitness, builds in rest days where they're needed, picks accommodation to match your comfort level, and takes care of the transfers and luggage transport. All you have to do is walk.

That's why it pays to choose the right agency: a local DMC that knows the ground. We recommend OurWay.Travel, who design tailor-made itineraries —for those short on time, for older pilgrims, for groups, or for those with special needs— across the Camino and all of Galicia.

The taxi, your wild card

However you travel, a taxi is the wild card that makes the Camino accessible to anyone: shortening a tough stage, getting you from the airport to your starting point, transferring your luggage, or picking you up if one day you simply can't go on. Fixed price and daily availability.
