Camino de Santiago Weather Planning

When should I walk the Camino?

There's no universally "best" month — it depends on what matters most to you: weather, crowds, cost, or spiritual ambience. Here's a month-by-month honest breakdown so you can choose the window that fits your priorities.

January-February: cold, quiet, cheap

  • Temperature: 3-10°C, frost at night, occasional snow above 1.000m
  • Rain: frequent
  • Pilgrims: very few (50-100 per day in Sarria)
  • Albergue availability: many private albergues closed; municipals still open
  • Pros: solitude, atmosphere, low prices
  • Cons: gear must be serious (waterproof, thermal), some bars closed, limited food options in small villages

Recommended for: experienced pilgrims seeking introspection. Not for first-timers.

March: shoulder season starts

  • Temperature: 5-14°C
  • Rain: still frequent, but sunny days appear
  • Pilgrims: picking up (100-300/day in Sarria)
  • Pros: blooming landscape, more accommodation open, still calm
  • Cons: unpredictable weather, sometimes heavy rain days

April: Easter peak

  • Temperature: 8-18°C
  • Rain: moderate
  • Pilgrims: spikes during Easter week (Semana Santa)
  • Pros: beautiful spring colors, pilgrim mass and processions in Santiago, moderate temperatures
  • Cons: Easter week is fully booked 3 months ahead; see our Camino at Easter guide

Recommended for: spiritual pilgrims who want the Easter experience. Book early.

May: the sweet spot

  • Temperature: 10-22°C
  • Rain: occasional
  • Pilgrims: high but manageable (500-1.000/day in Sarria)
  • Pros: ideal weather, long days, everything open, gardens in bloom
  • Cons: growing demand, book accommodation in advance

Recommended for: most pilgrims. Arguably the best month overall.

June-July: peak season

  • Temperature: 14-28°C (can hit 35°C in inland areas)
  • Rain: low
  • Pilgrims: maximum (1.500-2.500/day in Sarria)
  • Pros: long daylight (sunset at 10 PM), guaranteed good weather most days, festive atmosphere
  • Cons: crowded paths, full albergues by noon, higher prices, heat on some stages

July 25th is the feast of St. James — major celebration in Santiago, especially in [Holy Years like 2027](/en/blog/holy-year-xacobeo-2027-what-to-know).

August: hottest and busiest

  • Temperature: 15-30°C
  • Rain: very low
  • Pilgrims: maximum
  • Pros: dry weather guaranteed, holiday season for European pilgrims
  • Cons: can be uncomfortably hot on some stages, everything crowded

Recommended for: pilgrims who can only travel in August (vacation constraints). Start walking at dawn (6 AM) to avoid heat.

September: second sweet spot

  • Temperature: 12-24°C
  • Rain: picks up at the end of the month
  • Pilgrims: still high but dropping
  • Pros: mild weather, wine harvest in León, fewer crowds than summer, most accommodation still open
  • Cons: start of rainy season in late September

Recommended for: a close second to May. Many experienced pilgrims prefer September.

October: shoulder season ends

  • Temperature: 8-18°C
  • Rain: frequent
  • Pilgrims: dropping (200-600/day in Sarria)
  • Pros: autumn colors in forests, lower prices, plenty of availability
  • Cons: unpredictable weather — could be sunny or pour for 3 days straight

November-December: off season

  • Temperature: 3-12°C
  • Rain: heavy
  • Pilgrims: very few
  • Albergue availability: reduced (many private albergues closed)
  • Pros: solitude, post-summer prices, spiritual quiet
  • Cons: serious winter gear required, bars and facilities limited in small villages

Quick recommendations

  • First timer + flexible dates: May or September
  • Spiritual focus: Easter week (book early) or first week of October
  • Maximum social energy: July
  • Budget priority: March or October
  • Solitude priority: November-February (but pack well)
  • Holy Year planning: read our Xacobeo 2027 guide
