Camino de Santiago: Spring vs Summer — When Is the Best Time to Walk?
Comparing spring and summer for walking the Camino de Santiago. Weather, crowds, prices, and what to expect in each season.
Choosing Your Season
The Camino de Santiago is walkable year-round, but the two most popular seasons are spring (April-June) and summer (July-August). Each has distinct advantages and drawbacks.
Spring (April - June)
Weather
- Temperatures: 12-22°C (54-72°F)
- Rain: Galicia is green for a reason. Expect rain, especially in April and May. June is drier.
- Daylight: Long days, sunset around 9:30 PM by June
Crowds

- April and May are moderately busy
- June gets busier as summer approaches
- You will rarely struggle to find a bed in an albergue
Pros
- Comfortable walking temperatures
- Galicia is at its most beautiful — wildflowers, green countryside
- Lower prices for accommodation
- Fewer crowds on the trail and at monuments
Cons
- Rain is likely — bring good waterproofs (see our rain gear tips)
- Some mountain passes (O Cebreiro) can still be cold in April
- A few seasonal cafés and albergues may not have opened yet
Summer (July - August)
Weather
- Temperatures: 20-32°C (68-90°F)
- Rain: Much less frequent, but not impossible
- Daylight: Very long days, sunset around 10 PM
Crowds
- Peak season — the busiest months on the Camino
- Albergues fill up early (arrive by 1-2 PM)
- Long queues at the Pilgrim Office in Santiago
Pros
- Best weather for drying clothes and sleeping outdoors
- All facilities open
- Festive atmosphere with many pilgrims
- Village festivals (fiestas) throughout Galicia
Cons
- Heat can be punishing, especially on exposed stretches
- Accommodation fills up fast — book hotels ahead
- More crowded trails and towns
- Higher prices
Shoulder Seasons
September and October are excellent alternatives: warm enough, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Even winter is possible on the lower-altitude routes through Galicia, though days are shorter and services are limited.
Our Recommendation
For the last 100 km from Sarria, late May or early June is ideal. The weather is warm but not hot, the countryside is gorgeous, and the crowds are manageable. Check our packing list to prepare for your chosen season.
