What is a Holy Year (Año Xacobeo)?
A Xacobeo or Compostela Holy Year happens when the feast of St James the Apostle (25 July) falls on a Sunday. Throughout that year the Holy Door of Santiago Cathedral stays open and pilgrims can obtain the plenary indulgence. The next one is 2027.
When is the next Holy Year after 2021?
The next Compostela Holy Year is 2027. The following ones are 2032, 2038 and 2049. The 2021-2022 Xacobeo was exceptionally extended because of the pandemic.
How do you obtain the indulgence during the Holy Year?
During the Holy Year the pilgrim must: 1) Visit Santiago Cathedral and walk through the Holy Door. 2) Pray for the intentions of the Pope. 3) Receive communion and the sacrament of confession (up to 15 days before or after). 4) Attending the Pilgrim's Mass is recommended.
Will the Camino be crowded in 2027?
Yes. In previous Holy Years pilgrim numbers multiplied by 2-3x compared to a normal year. Xacobeo 2010 registered 272,000 pilgrims and 2021 exceeded 178,000 despite restrictions. For 2027, 400,000+ are expected.
When should I book accommodation and taxis for 2027?
The earlier the better. Camino accommodation books up 6-12 months in advance for popular dates (July, Easter, 25 July). Airport-Sarria taxis too. If you plan to walk in 2027, start booking as soon as calendars open.
