Sarria Madrid Transport Camino de Santiago

Why Sarria?

Sarria is the most popular starting point for the Camino de Santiago. It sits exactly at the 100 km mark from Santiago, the minimum distance required to earn the Compostela certificate. Getting there from Madrid is straightforward with several options.

Option 1: Train (Renfe)

The most popular choice. There is no direct high-speed train, but you can travel via Ourense or Monforte de Lemos.

  • Route: Madrid Chamartín → Sarria (with change in Ourense or Monforte)
  • Duration: 5-7 hours depending on the connection
  • Price: €30-55 in Turista class
  • Frequency: Several daily departures
  • Book at: renfe.com — book early for the best fares

The Renfe Media Distancia train from Ourense to Sarria follows the beautiful Sil River valley.

  • Book at: alsa.es

There is no direct bus to Sarria, so you will need to change in Lugo. The Lugo–Sarria bus takes about 40 minutes.

Option 3: Fly to Santiago or Lugo

  • Madrid → Santiago (SCQ): 1 hour flight, multiple daily Iberia and Ryanair flights
  • From Santiago airport, you can take a bus to Santiago bus station, then a bus or train to Sarria (about 2.5 hours total)
  • A faster option: book a direct taxi transfer from Santiago airport to Sarria

Option 4: Direct Taxi Transfer from Santiago Airport

If you want zero hassle, a direct taxi from Santiago airport to Sarria takes about 1 hour 15 minutes via the AP-53 and LU-546. This is the best option if you arrive late at night, travel in a group (splitting costs), or carry lots of luggage.
